Our poinsettia story begins each year around July 4 when we receive around 45,000 unrooted poinsettia cuttings from Central America. We root them in a special foam for about four weeks. In early August, we spend about two weeks planting the rooted cuttings into 6.5”, 7”, 8”, 9”, and 10” Belden Baskets. Each year we plant around 23,000 pots in these pot sizes! Later in August we receive another 9,000 rooted poinsettia cuttings from another greenhouse for our 4.5” potted poinsettia production.
Throughout August and early September, we are busy pinching, spacing, and hand watering our precious poinsettias. In early September we begin to measure and track the heights of each poinsettia variety in a computer program. The height of each variety is carefully analyzed throughout the growing season so the poinsettias are the perfect height for you. By late September, all poinsettias are on an automatic watering system.
Preordering poinsettias begins in late September as the race to the holiday season begins. Each year it is essential to prebook your poinsettia needs. We carefully count and recount all the poinsettias we are growing and enter starting numbers into our computer system for each pot size and color. Orders are carefully entered into our computer system which tracks the amount of poinsettias that are available at any given time. Each year we strive to make sure all customers get the plants they ordered throughout the holiday season.
In 2015, we grew 32,777 pots of poinsettias for the holiday season. The weather was great for both wholesale and retail delivering; not one snow event to contend with! Warm weather coupled with a stronger economy helped 2015 poinsettia sales explode. We sold 32,120 pots of poinsettias (97.99% of our crop) throughout the 2015 holiday season!
While the sight of a greenhouse range full of blooming poinsettias in late November is spectacular, there is nothing more satisfying that seeing those same greenhouses empty on Christmas Eve. Each and every order placed with us is treated with care. We strive to grow beautiful poinsettias that your customers will appreciate year after year!
