Have you ever wondered how we start all of the beautiful spring plants we grow? Many of our annuals, perennials, and herbs are rooted in our own greenhouses. Each year we begin to receive unrooted cuttings in early December for spring sales. Unrooted cuttings continue to arrive throughout the winter and spring for pots, baskets, flats, and more.
Our cuttings arrive from Central America in small plastic bags that are
protected by insulated boxes. These cuttings are stuck in either a special soil cell or oasis material depending on the plant type. Throughout our greenhouses we have several rooting stations that are equipped with underbench heat and a mist system so the small cuttings have the right environment to produce roots.
Most of the plants we grow take 2 to 4 weeks to root out. After the root system is sufficiently developed, the plants are weaned from the mist and placed in other greenhouses. The plants may get trimmed or a special plant growth regulator treatment before they are planted in their final pots.

When the plants are ready, we plant them into their final pots. Once in their final pots, each plant type has different environmental requirements. With the proper water, fertilizer, and sunshine these plants grow into the blooming beauties you see each Spring!
